Acne

What It Is

Acne is an extremely common skin condition that the majority of adults and teenagers will suffer from at some point in their lives and it is important to note that acne can affect anyone at any age. Acne is characterised by the spots, pimples and oily skin that usually appear on the face, back and chest of those who display symptoms. There are various types of spots that can be identified as acne – these include blackheads, whiteheads, papules, nodules and cysts!

Why It Happens

There are a multitude of reasons as to why you could be suffering from acne, however, the most common cause of this skin condition is the hormonal shift that we all undergo during puberty. These hormones influence the glands that produce grease to create larger amounts of oil. This oil can then result in the blockage of pores on the skin and bring about symptoms such as inflammation and pus. There are also numerous skin concerns which can contribute to acne, such as your natural pore size, excessive sebum production and the prevalence of certain bacteria in the skin.

How it can be treated

Acne is a rather invasive skin condition and can be hard to live with on a day-to-day basis, especially during your teenage years. It has been linked with mental health issues and can cause scarring in extreme circumstances. Acne is also known to be famously difficult to treat – and we would always recommend using a mild cleanser and slightly warm water when washing. It’s also advisable to avoid wearing too much makeup and to completely remove any you do use before going to bed.

If you are looking for more specific treatment, then Dermaroller procedures are becoming increasingly effective at targeting and clearing acne. This is a trauma-induced treatment in which a collection of small needle heads is rolled over the skin – this kickstarts your body’s natural healing processes and causes it to produce healthy tissue in order to create a clearer and more youthful complexion.
