Rosacea

What It Is

Rosacea is a long-term inflammatory skin condition that causes redness and swelling across the face and cheeks. It is becoming increasingly common in women and people with lighter skin. The symptoms of rosacea can cause those affected to “flush” easily and encourage tiny red pimples to appear all over the face. Unlike acne, rosacea occurs most often in adults between the ages of 30 and 50. Those who suffer from rosacea can experience sore or red skin, and will occasionally play host to a rash of bumpy spots and pus-filled pustules on their cheeks, forehead and nose.

Why It Happens

The patches of red that appear on your face as a result of rosacea occur when blood vessels suffer damage and cannot naturally remove themselves from the surface of your skin. Rosacea can be triggered by a number of factors, however, there’s no one thing that is known to be the sole cause of this skin condition. Common causes of rosacea include alcohol, spicy food, caffeine, hot drinks and aerobic exercises. There are also several skin and health conditions that can contribute to rosacea, such as the presence of certain bacteria on your skin, the size of your pores and excess sebum (oil) production.

How it can be treated

Long-term treatments have proven to be extremely effective against rosacea. Dermarollers are commonly used to improve and combat both rosacea and active acne. By using a simple handheld device, our professional dermatologists can carefully guide a collection of small needles across the surface of your skin – the minor trauma that is caused as a result of this elicits a strong healing process from within to create a more youthful and healthy complexion.

You can also be prescribed a host of prescription antibiotics and medical-grade creams to help control and alleviate the symptoms of rosacea – however this will not cure the problem and it could become worse if not treated effectively.
