The Importance Of Sun Protection For Your Skin

In light of Sun Awareness Week (2nd-8th May), we wanted to take some time to discuss the importance of sun protection, what happens to your skin as a result of sun damage and what treatment options are available to you here at La Fuente Clinic.

The Best Forms Of Sun Protection

There are several risks associated with sun damage when it comes to your skin. There are likely to be ones that you are more familiar with, like sunburn and skin cancer, but you might be surprised to know that sun damage can also contribute to the signs of premature ageing. These include fine lines and wrinkles, freckles and sun spots, dryness, an uneven tone and more.

The most important thing you can do to protect exposed skin from the harmful UV rays in sunlight is to apply a daily SPF of at least 30. The key is to apply it regularly rather than only once a day as your level of sun protection only lasts around 2-4 hours. Be sure to invest in a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Certain items of clothing and accessories can help to shield your delicate skin while out in the sun, such as sun hats and sunglasses. There are lenses that filter out the UV rays, which is something to look out for when investing in some new specs.

Finding some shade is another way to limit the damage to your skin. Make the use of natural shelter from things like trees, or take an umbrella on picnics or to the beach with you. With that said, shade alone isn’t enough to keep your skin safe and you should still apply your sunscreen throughout the day. Even on overcast days, those harmful UV rays can penetrate through the cloud barrier and cause havoc for your skin.

Treating Sun Damage

If you notice any changes in your skin, particularly the appearance of new moles and freckles or changes to existing ones, then it’s important to schedule a skin cancer check. This will rule out any serious underlying concerns and allow our skincare experts at La Fuente Clinic to focus on enhancement and rejuvenation.

When the damage is already done, it might be time to consider some advanced aesthetics. We offer a wide range of 5-star treatments that are designed to remedy the effects of sun damage, from dermaplaning to TheraClear™ skin cleansing. Your aesthetician will guide you through your treatment journey, beginning with a thorough consultation that will enable us to grasp your concerns and personalise your care.

Schedule yours by calling 01926 893091 or by booking online here. If you have any questions or concerns regarding sun protection, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
