“Zoom Face” and the Renewed Interest In Aesthetics

For most of us, working from home – something which has even acquired its own regularly uttered acronym (WFH!) as of late – has quickly become part of our “new normal” as employers and other figures of authority do what they can to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Such time out of the office and away from the familiar faces of our colleagues has, of course, given necessary rise to alternative methods of communication – with video conferencing app Zoom holding thousands upon thousands of virtual meetings and catch-ups throughout lockdown and beyond. In fact, Zoom is now such a part of our daily lives that it’s hard to remember a time when we weren’t being asked to sit tight in a virtual waiting room en route to being given access to a multi-screened chat by the meeting’s host!

The problem is, however, that the increase in time that we’ve spent chewing the fat with our workmates and line managers in these virtual get-togethers has triggered a bit of an obsession with how we look in comparison to others and forced many of us to confront appearance-based insecurities that we never knew existed. Welcome everyone, to the age of “Zoom face”!

A closer look at ourselves

As we’re sure you know by now, in addition to letting you look upon the faces of those you’re conversing with, Zoom also allows you to see yourself on camera – a nifty design feature that has actually contributed to a surge in self-consciousness as people take a closer look at themselves and pick up on facial flaws that had previously escaped their notice.

This phenomenon of close inspection has led to renewed interest in aesthetics treatments as a means of finding solutions to the sagging, creasing and wrinkling skin that has become much more obvious under the harsh glare of the camera light. And it’s hard to see this as anything less than a distressing form of self-analysis that has played havoc with our confidence and left us wanting to do what we can to look fresher, younger and less riddled with the impressions of age.

Increased popularity

This newly detailed focus on what our faces are doing when we talk, listen and discuss found an alternate outlet during lockdown, with online sales of image-enhancing makeup and beauty products soaring to eye-watering levels – a shift in activity that set the tone for things to come when clinics once were again permitted to open their doors.

Many of those who work in the aesthetics industry have reported an influx in enquiries for non-surgical treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers and more in-depth procedures like rhinoplasty and facelifts since restrictions relaxed and this is a trend that shows no sign of slowing down with much of the country, and office workers in particular, once again completing their daily duties from the comfort of their own homes.

Looking past the “Zoom Boom”

Zoom aside, it’s fair to say that the months we spent in lockdown had a profound impact on how we perceive ourselves. With many people furloughed due to economic uncertainty and the fact that the country pretty much ground to a halt, more than a fair bit of time was spent on learning new skills, taking on unlikely challenges and exploring previously alien pastimes that we would never otherwise have considered in a million years.

The idea of self-improvement also factored rather heavily here, and whether this amounted to getting into shape, thinking more about what we ate or what we could do to feel better about ourselves, it’s little surprise that aesthetics treatments have enjoyed such a swell in popularity with the country now reopen for business.
