Braces

What They Are

Braces… As a teenager, they are probably something that made you dread every visit to the dentist, however, looking back you’re probably pleased you endured the hardship when you did, especially if you’re now greeted with a stunning smile every time you gaze into a mirror. If you didn’t have the luxury of having braces during your teenage years, or you did and your teeth have just become worse as you’ve aged, then you should know that it is never too late to consider treatment.

At La Fuente, we provide traditional braces that can help correct misaligned and crooked teeth, underbites, overbites and a host of other dental issues. Braces can be an option to resolve oral discomfort, or they can be a simple solution for working towards a perfect smile. We offer many types of braces and several alternative options such as Invisalign®.

The Treatment

When it comes to getting braces there isn’t one option that works for everyone. This is why one of our medical professionals at La Fuente will sit with you prior to treatment to discuss the best brace for you and your smile going forward. Some of the options available at La Fuente include:

  • Traditional metal braces: These braces are made of metal and attach to the front of your teeth with either brackets or bands. This type of brace is usually recommended for more severe teeth correction and is also one of the quickest treatment methods.
  • Ceramic braces: This type of brace is very similar to traditional metal braces but tends to be more comfortable than its metal counterparts thanks to the use of higher quality materials. This option also tends to be popular as it is more discrete.
  • Lingual braces: Lingual braces are virtually invisible due to the way they sit on the tongue side of the teeth. This also reduces the chances of damaging the surface of your front teeth.
  • Clear aligners: This option is great if you are looking to correct simpler, less severe alignment issues. They are popular as they are clear plastic trays that fit onto your teeth and are easily removed when you want to eat or brush your teeth. These need to be kept in for 20-22 hours a day!

Everyone’s experience with braces is different and the duration of your treatment is dependent on multiple factors. This includes the severity of your problem, how far your teeth need to move to be aligned, the health of your teeth and gums and how closely you listen to your dentist’s instructions.

After your braces have been fitted, your orthodontist is likely to schedule repeat check-up appointments so they are able to monitor the progress of your treatment and make any adjustments if needed.

Am I Suitable For Treatment?

FAQ's

Does it hurt?

If your orthodontist needs to make adjustments to your braces during treatment then your mouth may start to feel sore and you may experience some discomfort. If this happens, your doctor will recommend certain over-the-counter painkillers to help ease your pain.

When will I feel the results?

The time it takes for you to notice visible results is dependent on the severity of your problem. In some cases, you may start to see an improvement as little as four weeks after treatment, for others this could take six to eight weeks.

It is likely that you will be the first to notice any significant changes.

How many treatments are required?

Most patients only require one treatment to fit their brace, however, after this, you are likely to need to visit your orthodontist every month to ensure that your braces are working efficiently and for any maintenance that may be required.
