Facial
Blushing

Almost any situation can bring about intense blushing, and we’ve all been there, whether it be performing on stage, taking part in a competitive sport or having a simple conversation with friends, there really is no logical reason why it occurs.

If you suffer from severe blushing, you might struggle to feel confident or comfortable in social and professional situations, and this is an extremely common symptom of those who suffer from social anxiety.

There are two types of facial blushing: wet blushing and dry flushing. Wet blushing is believed to be induced by an overactive nervous system, and can occur if you are unusually sensitive or frequently find yourself in emotional stress. If this happens, you’ll find that your flushing is often associated with increased perspiration. Dry flushing does not cause increased perspiration, instead, it is normally characterised by frequent spells of facial redness.

What It Is

Facial blushing is a fairly self-explanatory condition – it refers to the involuntary reddening of the face, whether this be due to embarrassment, stress, anxiety or numerous other social triggers. The terms blushing and flushing both describe the same thing, however, flushing is usually used in association with more severe cases of reddening, also known as idiopathic cranio-facial erythema.

The visible symptoms of facial blushing are similar to those who suffer from rosacea, and blushing can even be a symptom of rosacea in some cases. The key difference is that those who suffer from rosacea will develop small red bumps during their flare-ups, with these flare-ups lasting anywhere between a few weeks and a few months. Facial blushing, on the other hand, tends to diminish shortly after its trigger or cause has been removed.

The Treatment

Firstly, it is important to seek medical advice from a GP or dermatologist to ensure that your facial blushing is not a sign of an underlying medical issue, such as an overactive thyroid, or the result of menopause.

There are numerous ways to treat facial blushing, one of the most popular being laser treatment. Laser therapy is an effective and safe treatment that can remove the surface blood vessels responsible for visible redness.

If your facial blushing occurs due to anxiety, then certain medications, such as beta blockers, could be prescribed to help manage and alleviate some of these symptoms. If our experts feel that this is something better suited to you and your individual symptoms, then we may refer you elsewhere.

Am I Suitable For Treatment?

Facial blushing can occur for many reasons, however, it is something that is strongly tied to emotional changes. Your face has a higher concentration of capillaries compared to any other part of the body and in your cheeks, these blood vessels are wider and closer to the surface of your skin. This means that when you are in an embarrassing situation, your face is likely to be the first part of your body to undergo a rapid change and become flushed.

Frequently suffering from bouts of facial flushing can make you feel uncomfortable and knock your confidence, so if you find yourself in this situation, seeking the help of a professional is the right path to take. At La Fuente Clinic, we will be able to assess whether or not laser therapy is right for you or if you would be better suited to another form of treatment. Hopefully, we’ll be able to draft a personalised treatment plan to help reduce or eliminate the appearance of blushing.
