Migraines and
Tension Headaches

What They Are

Migraines and tension headaches are common conditions that can be both painful and difficult to deal with on a regular basis. Most people believe them to be the same issue, however, despite them being similar they are caused by different things and have their own unique symptoms.

Migraines are strong headaches that affect everyone in different ways. For some people, they may only last a few minutes, whereas for others they can last days. Typical symptoms of migraines include nausea, vomiting and photosensitivity.

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and are experienced by everyone at some point or another. These headaches are often defined by a throbbing sensation and a pain can sometimes be felt on both sides of the head. In some cases, tension headaches can also make your muscles ache. Tension headaches do not usually prevent you from going about your everyday life.

If you start to experience an increase in either migraines or tension headaches or show any severe symptoms then you should seek medical advice.

The Treatment

Both tension headaches and migraines have been proven to respond well to Botulinum toxin treatments.

Migraine patients are usually injected with several shots of Botulinum toxin on a recurring basis. This is administered to several parts of the head and neck and can help reduce the number of days adults suffer from migraines by as much as 50%.

Botulinum toxin is effective at treating this issue as it is believed to be able to block the chemicals that stimulate your response to pain. When injected into key areas, Botulinum toxin prevents the chemicals from reaching the nerve endings in your head and neck which results in the reduction of pain.

In terms of tension headaches, Botulinum toxin functions in a similar way and can decrease the frequency and intensity of these headaches. Botulinum toxin is often recommended as a preventative measure and not only will it make your headaches more manageable, but it will also remove your need for other forms of medication or pain relief.

Am I Suitable For Treatment?

If you frequently suffer from migraines or tension headaches then you are likely to benefit from Botulinum toxin treatment. Usually, those who opt for treatment have tried other forms of pain relief or medication before to little effect.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of Botulinum toxin treatment, we will be unable to treat anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. You will also be unable to undergo treatment if you normally react negatively to Botulinum toxin injections or are allergic to them. All of this will be discussed with you during a pre-treatment consultation to ensure that you are safe and that no unforeseen complications arise as a result of Botulinum toxin administration.

Most patients experience very minimal pain or discomfort during treatment. If you are worried about this part of the process then let your practitioner know as they should be able to provide you with a painkiller or numbing cream.

When will I feel the results?

For most patients, relief is not immediate. However, after approximately four or five days you should see significant improvement.

How many treatments are required?

Treatments for both migraine and tension headaches are not permanent so you will have to return every three to four months for a top-up treatment.
