Teeth Grinding
(Bruxism)
What It Is
Bruxism is a medical term used to describe the unconscious clenching or grinding of your teeth. It can occur whilst you are both awake or asleep, and if left unchecked, can lead to significant dental problems. The chronic teeth grinding that is characteristic of bruxism can also cause other issues such as earaches, muscle aches, facial pain and even muscular hypertrophy in the most extreme cases.
Those who suffer from bruxism may not even be aware that they are grinding their teeth together. It is common for this to occur whilst you are sleeping and this is something that is often related to stress and anxiety, although these are not the only triggers. If you wake up with a painful jaw or your partner regularly catches you making a grinding sound in your sleep, then treatment for bruxism may be beneficial for you.
The Treatment
When it comes to bruxism there are many different types of treatment available. Teeth guards and anti-inflammatory medications are popularly used, however, these can only help alleviate the pain associated with bruxism and do not address the root of the problem.
At La Fuente, we recommend Botulinum toxin as a solution for bruxism as although this cannot cure this condition completely, it can empower you to manage its symptoms better than any mouth guard or prescription medication. Furthermore, each Botulinum toxin treatment usually lasts for around three to four months, meaning you can sleep soundly without having to worry about what you are doing to your teeth.
During this procedure, small doses of Botulinum toxin are injected directly into the jaw muscles. This injection relaxes these muscles, weakening them enough to stop the unconscious grinding and clenching of your teeth.
Am I Suitable For Treatment?
Almost anyone over the age of 18 is suitable for Botulinum toxin injections, however, the best candidates are those who are physically healthy with no skin disorders affecting the treatment area. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding you are likely to be unsuitable for treatment.

FAQ's
Does it hurt?
Most patients report that the pain is similar to a normal injection, only the needles used during this treatment tend to be significantly smaller than what you might be used to.
When will I feel the results?
Many people will see visible results and a reduction in the symptoms associated with bruxism a week after treatment. However this will vary from patient to patient and, in some cases, this may take longer.
How many treatments are required?
Patients usually only need one session to help reduce the symptoms attributable to teeth grinding. One Botulinum toxin treatment lasts for roughly three to four months, so most patients will need to visit us for top-up treatments throughout the year.
Is there any downtime?
Most patients state that they experience little to no downtime after their Botulinum toxin treatment - in most cases, you will be able to resume your day right away.
