When it comes to skin prep, less is often more. Preparing your skin ahead of your next treatment isn’t about throwing every serum and exfoliant at it in the hope of speeding things up. It’s about arriving with skin that’s healthy, balanced and ready for treatment.
Something we hear surprisingly often in clinic…
“I’ve bought a few new skincare products because I wanted my skin to be in the best possible condition before my appointment.”
It makes perfect sense. If you’ve invested in a treatment, you naturally want to give it the best chance of success. The trouble is, introducing a whole new routine a few days beforehand can sometimes do more harm than good.
Good Skin Prep Starts With Consistency
We’ve all been there. A special occasion is coming up, you’ve got a treatment booked and suddenly you’re influenced by something you see online promising “glass skin overnight”.
The problem? Your skin hasn’t seen that product before.
One of the best things you can do when it comes to skin prep is stick with what already works. If your current routine keeps your skin comfortable and happy, there’s rarely any benefit in changing it just before an appointment.
That’s particularly true if you’re using active ingredients like retinol or exfoliating acids. While these products have their place, your practitioner may advise pausing them before certain treatments to help reduce unnecessary sensitivity.
Not Every Treatment Needs The Same Level Of Prep
This is where things can become confusing because skin prep isn’t one-size-fits-all.
If you’re coming in for laser treatment, avoiding sun exposure beforehand is one of the biggest priorities. Tanned or sunburnt skin can affect when it’s safe to carry out treatment, so wearing SPF and protecting your skin becomes even more important during the summer months.
Preparing for microneedling is a little different. Healthy, hydrated skin generally responds better than skin that’s irritated from over-exfoliation or trying too many new products.
Then there are treatments like semi-permanent makeup, where you may be advised to avoid alcohol or certain supplements beforehand, while many Circadia facials require very little preparation at all beyond arriving with skin that’s in its usual condition.
The point is that good skin prep isn’t about following the same checklist every time. It’s about understanding what your specific treatment needs.
Your Skin Barrier Deserves More Credit
The phrase “skin barrier” gets mentioned a lot these days, but it’s for good reason.
Think of it as your skin’s protective shield. When it’s functioning well, your skin is more comfortable, better hydrated and generally copes with treatments more effectively. When it’s compromised, everything can feel a little more reactive.
That’s why a big part of skin prep is simply looking after the basics. Gentle cleansing, regular moisturising and daily SPF can often do more for your skin than constantly chasing the latest trend online.
Healthy skin rarely comes from doing everything. More often, it comes from doing the right things consistently.
Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions
One thing we always encourage at La Fuente is asking if you’re unsure.
Can you wear makeup to your appointment? Should you shave before laser hair removal? Do you need to stop using a particular product before microneedling?
These are questions we answer every day and we’d much rather you ask than spend the days leading up to your treatment second-guessing yourself.
Good skin prep doesn’t mean knowing all the answers already. It means getting the right advice for your treatment and your skin.
Better Skin Prep, Better Treatment Experience
While every treatment is different, one thing stays the same: giving your skin the best possible starting point can make a real difference.
Whether you’re booked in for HIFU, microneedling, laser hair removal, a Circadia facial or semi-permanent makeup, arriving with calm, well-looked-after skin allows us to focus on what really matters – helping you achieve the best possible results.
So, before your next appointment, resist the temptation to completely overhaul your skincare routine. A little thoughtful skin prep goes a long way and sometimes the simplest approach really is the most effective.
